Actual Practical Tasks

1) Script

Write the full script for your TV drama extract. You'll hopefully have a chunk of this done from your preliminary exercise but now is the time to make sure you have scripted a full three-minute extract that meets the brief.

SCRIPT

2) Shot list

Write a comprehensive shot list for every single possible shot you plan to film for your crime drama extract. For three minutes of film, that is going to be a LOT of shots - quite possibly more than 200.

3) Mise-en-scene planning

Plan everything that will appear in front of the camera in your production. Remember CLAMPS: Costume, Lighting, Actors (cast, placement, movement and expression), Make-up, Props, Setting.

COSTUME: Detective uniform - STRAYING FURTHER AWAY FROM TYPICAL TOP HAT ATTIRE. Keep it clean and simple, trench-coat, jacket (underneath the trench-coat), shirt w/ tie, cargo's, boots. Trying to convey that he tends to be very carefree, not completely strict but still keeps a sense of formality with him.

Thug/Drug Kingpin outfit - STRAYING FURTHER AWAY FROM TYPICAL NICE SUIT, GOLD WATCH ATTIRE. Keep it EXTREMELY SIMPLE, dirty hooded jacket, trashy jeans or cargo's - either is fine - and roughed-up shoes. Trying to covey that he doesn't bother to try and hide that he is a monster, he'd rather embrace all the dirt and filth in his life than put up a front to cover his tracks. He simply doesn't care.

Secretary uniform - literally the same as the detective but just female. Trying to covey that she slightly cares, not fully. Still wants to look professional while slightly caring though.

LIGHTING:
Keeping it very minimal here, for dark shots, particular lighting will be used in order to communicate different themes are perspectives for audiences. The garage shot for example can be used to portray the good guy as a villain, and the bad guy as an anti-hero of some sorts. It can also be used to portay feelings and I will have colour correction as a big part in post production.

ACTORS:
Very short section, I'm using people I know for my characters, including myself. I find this easier to work with as I've already established bonds with these people, which will in turn create a positive working environment.

MAKE-UP:
Another short section. Make-up will be used to convey emotion within the CHARACTERS, most seen in The overSEER. He will physically look dirty. Messy face and all. The idea is to communicate to the audiences that he doesn't care anymore, he has no sympathy for human life. He's brought himself into this life so there's no reason to wash away your sins when you're this deep.

PROPS:
ANOTHER SHORT SECTION. I'm not very fond of props so I don't think I'll utilise many. I prefer physically action over props, as I feel that the human body allows for a broader range of emotions to be shown.

SETTING:
A rural area, a town with a shady underground crime "kingdom", contrasting with the very organised detective outpost in the same town.

4) Shooting schedule

The final aspect of your pre-production planning is to come up with a comprehensive shooting schedule. How many scenes do you need to film? How long will it take? Which actors do you need and when? Planning all of this out with specific dates and times is a crucial part of the pre-production process.
