Sound Analysis blog tasks

 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:

  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects

"Homelander's mental breakdown" (The Boys)

All throughout the 37 second clip non-diegetic sound is used, through the use of the music score in the background made specifically for the show. However diegetic sound is cleverly mixed in with us hearing our main antagonist react to what he's watching. An example of the dialogue in this scene could be the sounds Homelander makes (e.g. him laughing, shouting or swearing). A sound bridge is used from 0:13 - 0:14 as he swears and starts to get progressively aggressive and from 0:22 - 0:24 as he goes from whining to cutting to him looking up. I think that this scene uses both parallel and contrapuntal sound as the music score sounds out of place for what our actor is doing, but the harsh cords of the violin complement the scene so well. Sound effects could refer to when he closes his fists and the rubber from his gloves make a sound at 0:12 - 0:13. There isn't a use of any voice overs anywhere by the looks of it.
